What are the types of sentences in English?

The different types of sentences in English are:

  • Assertive/ Simple Sentence
  • Imperative Sentence
  • Interrogative Sentence
  • Exclamatory Sentence
  • Assertive Sentence: Makes a statement or declaration.
    • Example: "The sky is blue."
  • Interrogative: Asks a question.
    • Example: "Is the sky blue?"
  • Imperative: Gives a command or makes a request.
    • Example: "Close the door."
  • Exclamatory: Expresses strong emotion or excitement.
    • Example: "What a beautiful day!" 
By Structure (How they are built):
  • Simple:
    Contains one independent clause (a subject and a verb that can stand alone as a complete thought).
    • Example: "The dog barked."
  • Compound:
    Contains two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet) or a semicolon.
    • Example: "The dog barked, and the cat hissed."
  • Complex:
    Contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses (a clause that cannot stand alone as a complete thought and is usually introduced by a subordinating conjunction like "while," "because," "if," etc.).
    • Example: "Because the dog barked, the cat hissed."
  • Compound-Complex:
    Contains two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
    • Example: "The dog barked, and the cat hissed, because they were both scared."
